It's important to get the correct measurement of your dog's neck before ordering. The best and most accurate way is to use a soft fabric tape measure around your dog's neck.
The collar you buy should be larger than your dog's neck but smaller than their head, so it can't slip off.
CHAIN COLLARS (32MM AND 43MM)
- Measure at the center of the neck, where the collar will sit.
- Pick the next size up from that measurement. If your dog measures 20″, choose the 22″.
Some people like extra slack for the look, usually 1–3″ more. Just make sure the collar is still smaller than your dog's head, or it could slip off.
LOCK COLLARS
Measure around the middle of the neck and order that exact length. No extra room is needed.
CHECK CHAINS AND SHOW LEADS (SLIP COLLARS)
A check chain goes over the head, so measure the widest part of the head (over the ears and under the jaw) and choose that size or the next one up. For show leads, measure around the neck and add 2–3″.
Safety first: Use a check chain or show lead only for walks, training, or the show ring while you're holding the leash. Never leave one on an unattended dog, in a crate, or on a tie-out, because it can tighten or catch. Take it off after every session.
MEASURING FROM YOUR DOG'S CURRENT COLLAR
Don't measure end to end. This is a very common mistake. Measure from the point on the "male" end of the buckle where the female side meets it, to the end of the female side of the collar.
